Shelton didn't write the song, whose PG-13-rated storyline and R&B hooks were co-authored by Craig Wiseman and Deric Ruttan. Even so, "Came Here to Forget" appears to hint at his new relationship with former Voice judge Gwen Stefani, with Shelton singing rebound-worthy come-ons like, "You're getting over him, and I'm getting over her/Ain't gonna say a word." In the background, drum loops and minor-key guitar arpeggios push the song into the same territory as last year's "Sangria," another song whose lyrics sketched out a similar story of late-night, half-lit romance.
Released during the midst of another Voice season, "Came Here to Forget" is one of the better-timed singles of Shelton's career. The full album, due in stores May 20, promises more songs centered around the themes of breaking up, coming clean and moving on, while Stefani's own This is What the Truth Feels Like — which hits stores next week, bringing with it 12 songs co-written by the singer herself — offers a similarly intimate view of her own split from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.
