It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for — the first episode of the 10-part series, ‘The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.’ The show kicked off on Feb. 2, and we’re walking you through every step of the way with our live blog.
It all started here, just two years after the LA riots following Rodney King‘s attacks. It was June 12, 1994 when we met the handsome charming man that was O.J. Simpson (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). He was picked up by a chauffeur and taken to the airport. Cut down the street, to Bundy, when a dogwalker finds a dog with blood on his paws. With that, he traces it back to two bodies laying in the walkway: Nicole Brown Simpson, and friend, Ron Goldman.
Right away, detectives searched the house — and realize it’s O.J.’s ex wife. The detective on the case, Mark Fuhrman, remembered that O.J. lives down the street. He was there years ago, for a domestic dispute. Shortly after, we met Kato Kaelin (played by Billy Magnussen), who lived in O.J.’s guest house. He directed the police to his backyard, where they found the other glove, that matched the one at Nicole’s house. When O.J. was alerted of the murder, detectives called him saying she was “killed” — and he didn’t ask how she died. Obviously, that was enough for them to wonder, and to call up prosecutor Marcia Clark (the amazing Sarah Paulson).
When O.J. arrived back at his home, the police, press, etc. were all there, as was his best friend, Robert Kardashian (played by David Schwimmer). Police took O.J. around back, and handcuffed him — and it was caught by one cameraman. While they brought him in for questioning, the tape was super sketchy, and the police basically didn’t ask any questions. He didn’t directly answer any of the questions, much to Marcia Clark’s frustration — she was also in the middle of a divorce.
Following the questioning, O.J. went back to his house (yes, they let him go back inside the house) with his family, friends, and Robert — and Howard Weitzman, his lawyer, wasn’t around, and he needed a new lawyer. So who do you call? Well, who else? Robert Shapiro (played by John Travolta) was brought in — and right away, he enlisted Robert Kardashian to team the case as well. His next order: ask O.J. if he did it. O.J.’s answer: “No, I loved her.”
‘Do You Think He Did It?’
O.J. also went in for a lie detector — and scored a -24, the lowest score possible. With the Roberts outside waiting, you see the look in his best friends’ eyes. While he said aloud “there’s no way he could have done it,” it was almost as though he was trying to convince himself.
We also met Johnnie Cochran (played by Courtney B. Vance), who ironically also went to visit Neverland to see an afraid-of-the-color-lime Michael Jackson. During the episode, we didn’t see too much of him, but when the O.J. case broke, he was the one that headed on TV to cover it.
When it came time for the funeral, we met Kris Jenner (played by Selma Blair) and Faye Resnick (played by Connie Britton). And yes, we got a look at the Kardashian kids running around. Everyone was actually pretty shocked that O.J. not only showed up, but actually kissed her forehead in the casket.
After the funeral, the DNA results came in to Marcia and they had enough for a warrant for his arrest and were heading to pick him up. However, with Robert Shapiro knowing everyone, he convinced investigator Tom Lange, that he would bring O.J. in two and a half hours later. And he didn’t show up. Instead, he was writing a suicide letter and a will. So the police had to go to him.
With only he and Robert Kardashian in the room, O.J. brought a gun to his head — then ran to Kim Kardashian’s room (which had JTT posters all over the walls). Juice’s best friend, A.C. (Al Cowlings played by Malcolm Jamal Warner) showed up in the bronco to help. And when the police showed up to arrest him, he had snuck out in the Bronco. And that, led to the chase.
