Marc Jacob's Controversial Show

It’s not a proper New York Fashion Week without a little controversy!
This year, Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2017 runway show, which featured the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, was the one to create some questionable buzz after the designer featured models rocking colorful dreadlocks. Though Jacobs previously stated that the pastel locs were inspired by
director Lana Wachowski, many claimed the controversial decision was cultural appropriation (as many wearing the dreadlocks were white people) and questioned why black models with natural hair weren’t used instead.The much talked-about wool updos were the brainchild of Jacobs, hairstylist Guido Palau and a Florida-based Etsy shop owner named Jen. According to New York Magazine’s The Cut, over 12,500 yards of yarn were hand-dyed and fashioned into 55 dreads that were assembled into wigs and ponytails.

The faux hair was paired with bright metallic jackets, see-through tops (notably rocked by Bella Hadid) and thigh-high socks with platform shoes.

After the show, Palau address the accusations of cultural appropriation, saying, “I don’t really think about that. I take inspiration from every culture. Style comes from clashing things. It’s always been there — if you’re creative, if you make food, music, and fashion, whatever, you’re inspired by everything.”
