Green Day's New Single Will be Out Next Week

Green Day will release a new single next week. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shared the news on Instagram Monday, writing “Green Day is putting out a new single called ‘Bang Bang’ August 11.” Armstrong didn’t share any additional details about the song, although he did append the post’s caption with “#mynewband.”

The famed Bay Area pop-punk group last shared “Xmas Time of Year” in December. But, other than that cut and a demos collection released for Record Store Day 2014, “Bang Bang” will be their first new music since 2012’s trilogy of albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!

Despite the multi-year break — which isn’t unprecedented for the group, considering they’ve taken at least three years between albums since 1997 — Green Day have kept busy. Armstrong released an Everly Brothers covers album with Norah Jones in 2013 and appears alongside Fred Armisen, Judy Greer, and Joan Jett in the new film Geezer. Last year, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and released a documentary, Heart Like a Hand Grenade, about the making of 2004’s political opus American Idiot.

Armstrong’s teenage sons have also gotten in on the family business in recent years, with Jakob Danger neé Armstrong releasing solo material and Joey helming the drums for breakout pop-punks SWMRS.
