Penelope Cruz is checking in to Layover.The Spanish actress and Oscar winner is set to star in and produce a big-screen adaptation of Lisa Zeidner’s 1999 novel about a grieving saleswoman who checks out of her day-to-day life and begins squatting in hotel rooms, Animus Films and Serena Films announced Thursday.Toni Kalem, an actress and filmmaker known for her work on The Sopranos, wrote the screenplay and will direct. Jim Young and Tatiana Kelly will produce alongside Cruz.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase such strong female talent both in front of and behind the camera,” Kelly said in the announcement.
Cruz was most recently seen in the comedies Zoolander 2 and The Brothers Grimsby, and her other film projects in the works include The Queen of Spain and Escobar.ew
