Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton told reporters that a gunman opened fire about 5 p.m. Thursday at Excel Industries, a manufacturer of lawnmowers in Hesston, Kansas – a city of about 3,700 people, 35 miles northwest of Wichita.
Walton said responding officers shot and killed the gunman, according to KWCH-TV.
After the shooting, the sheriff told assembled media that four to seven people are dead and an estimated 20 to 30 had been wounded – though investigators are still waiting to enter to factory, KAKE-TV reports.
According to NBC, those numbers are now 4 deceased including the gunman, and a total of 14 injured.
The shooting began outside the plan when the gunman opened fire on a pickup truck in downtown Hesston, wounding the man inside. Another man was wounded at an intersection nearby. A third victim was wounded in the parking lot of Excel before the shooter entered the building and opened fire, KSN-TV reports.
Walton confirmed that the gunman is an employee of Excel.
Witnesses told the Wichita Eagle that the shooter appeared to be armed with an assault rifle and a handgun.
Witness Jared Trujillo told KAKE that he was working on the assembly line when he heard what he thought was an explosion. A manager told workers that there was a shooter in the building and told them to run.
"He was just unloading on everybody," Trujillo said.
One employee was shot in the leg as he tried to escape, Trujillo recounted to KAKE. Trujillo and coworkers stopped and used to a belt to stop the bleeding and tended to him until ambulances arrived.
Trujillo embraced his wife Jennifer in a tearful hug as they were reunited.
"I'm just glad to see him. He's my life. I don't know what I'd do without him," Jennifer said.people
