Nigeria: Ex-President Jonathan's Adviser, Gulak Storms PDP HQ With Supporters, Declares Self Nat’l Chairman

Ahmed Gulak A civilian ‘coup’ has taken place in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, following reports that a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, has taken over affairs of the opposition party as national chairman.

The office of national chairman of the former ruling party became vacant on May 22, 2015 following the resignation of Adamu Mu’azu. His deputy, Prince Uche Secondus immediately stepped up and has been acting in that capacity.

However, Gulak dragged the party and Mr. Secondus to court, demanding that the position be substantially filled by a party member from the North-east, where the national chairmanship position was zoned to.

Delivering judgment in the case, an Abuja High Court ordered Secondus to vacate the seat in 14 days for the appellant, Gulak, who is from Adamawa State, North-east Nigeria, to assume the position of chairman of PDP but the acting chairman filed a stay of execution at the Appeal Court.

In an unexpected move on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Gulak proclaimed himself national chairman of the PDP amid cheers from his supporters at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Among those that witnessed Gulak’s taking over at the national secretariat included former presidential spokesman, Doyin Okupe.
