Claudia and Mike Drummond, the co-returning champions, were tied at $13,800 going into the Final Jeopardy! round, with newcomer Randi Kristensen coming from behind with $6,000. The final clue read:

All three picked a different U.S. city (Kristensen wasn't able to finish writing "Springfield"), and all three were wrong. Bummer. What's even worse, is all three bet everything they had, which created a three-way tie for last place. Triple-fail.
Host Alex Trebek had to carry out his official duties in announcing the surprising conclusion of the game and informing the contestants and viewers that all three players had lost and that Tuesday's game would start with three new contestants.
