What happens when you mix grad students, sex, booze, and magic? You get The Magicians, which is a television series that can only be described as magnificent madness as it is brought to life by the Syfy network. Of course, as many of you may already know, The Magicians is based off of the novel series by Lev Grossman. Although the characters have been aged up from high school to college, very minor changes were made to the incredible story he created.

Here’s the synopsis for the series, which has been ripped from the pages of the novel with Lev’s blessing:

The Magicians centers on Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant grad student chosen to attend Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real – and poses grave danger to humanity.

In the trailer above you’ll meet Quentin Coldwater, the main character, who is portrayed by the super handsome and charming Jason Ralph. Then there is his best friend/unrequited love Julia (Stella Maeve), whose story will be told simultaneously alongside Quentin’s unlike the first novel. You’ll also meet Eliot (Hale Appleman), Penny (Arjun Gupta), Alica (Olivia Taylor-Dudley), and Margo, formerly known as Janet in the novels, portrayed by Summer Bishil.

Although The Magicians is set to premiere on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 on Syfy, Lev Grossman announced on Twitter that the first episode will be screened for the very first time on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 10pm ET following the Childhood’s End finale. Plus, the screening will be 100% commercial free — how cool is that?
