Rita Ora Files Complaint to End 'Irrevocably Damaged' Relationship with Jay Z's Roc Nation

Rita Ora Files Complaint to End Contract with Jay Z's Roc Nation
It's complicated between Rita Ora and Jay Z's record label Roc Nation – and now the English singer wants out.

On Thursday, the 25 year old filed a complaint against Roc Nation in Los Angeles Superior Court, asking for her recording contract to be declared in violation of California law and unenforceable under the state's "seven year rule."

In court papers obtained by PEOPLE, Ora claims her "relationship with Roc Nation is irrevocably damaged" seven years after she was signed in 2008.

The suit sheds light on Ora's working relationship with Jay Z, who she found to be "an incredible partner at the label" until Roc Nation started a sports management firm and agency and launched Tidal Music. Eventually, there was a "revolving door of executives," making the singer believe "she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company."

Ora contends that matters were made worse when Roc Nation switched from Sony to Universal for distribution in 2013. With Roc Nation "legally obligated to leave Rita at Sony," the singer was "caught in a political quagmire of dysfunction."

According to the complaint, "Roc Nation has made it clear that if Rita wants a recording career, she's on her own. Working around Roc Nation's lack of focus and support, Rita has pushed forward with her recording career, self-funding her promotional television appearances, recording costs and video projects."

As a "handful of admittedly worthy heritage superstar artists" have received the label's support, Ora has "only been able to record one album in seven years," the complaint alleges.

The singer, who was romantically linked to rocker Travis Barker earlier this year, has remained in the spotlight despite her tense relationship with the label. In June, she joined The X Factor U.K. as a judge, and in October 2014, her duet with Iggy Azalea, "Black Widow," rose to No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.people
