Michelle Cardona alleges the actress roughed her up in the teen's Upper Manhattan home on July 29. The actress appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court Thursday to face four counts of assault and harassment, PEOPLE has confirmed.
Cardona alleges that Polanco, 33, punched her in the head, pulled her hair and used her fingernails to strike the teen's arms, according to court documents obtained by Page Six, which first reported the news.
Polanco's lawyer Gerald Lefcourt says that his client was set up, and that Cardona is seeking to get money from Polanco.
This is an attempt to extort money by making a false claim," Lefcourt tells PEOPLE.
He says Cardona was recorded asking the OITNB star for money in exchange for making the case go away – and those recordings have been presented in court.
"We expect the case to be dismissed," Lefcourt says.
Polanco's next court date is in January.people
