French Train Attack Hero Spencer Stone Seriously Injured After Being Stabbed Several Times in California

Spencer Stone, one of the men who foiled a terror attack on a Paris-bound train in August, was seriously injured after being stabbed several times on Wednesday night, PEOPLE confirms.

Stone is in stable condition after being repeatedly stabbed in Sacramento, California, near Travis Air Force Base, where he is stationed. "A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury," a spokesman for the U.S. Air Force tells PEOPLE. "The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. He is currently in stable condition." CBS News was the first to report the story.

Spencer Stone's Father Brian Stone was fielding calls and tells PEOPLE he still wasn't exactly sure of the details of what happened: "He's out of surgery and doing well. He's been upgraded so no longer critical and it looks like he's going to be okay. All I can say is that this world is not short of idiots."

Brian Stone tells PEOPLE that Stone was admitted in critical condition and was upgraded to serious after surgery.

According to KCRA, a fight in the street led to Stone's being stabbed multiple times. Investigators blocked off two blocks in the area, the station reports.

A man and a woman were questioned by police but there is no word that they were detained, and cops have not released any suspect descriptions, KCRA reports.

According to The Air Force Times, cops initially thought Stone would not survive and began treating the incident as a homicide investigation.

Stone, 23, previously sustained a serious injury while trying to subdue terror suspect Ayoub El-Khazzani on the Paris-bound train earlier this summer. El-Khazaani, who allegedly opened fire on the train, allegedly stabbed Stone with a box cutter. Stone needed surgery to reattach part of his hand.

Stone's fellow hero and childhood friend, Alex Skarlatos, tweeted out his well-wishes:
Everybody send prayers out to the stone family today

"It is believed that the victim was out with a group of friends when a physical altercation led to the victim being stabbed multiple times in his upper body. Detectives were called to the scene to assist with the investigation and the victim is currently being treated for what appears to be non-life threatening injuries," the statement read.

Sacramento police tweeted: The assault incident is not related to a terrorist act. Assault occurred near a bar, alcohol is believed to be a factor."
