As the 2013 and 2015 winners of the Gold Cup, respectively, the United States and Mexico will battle it out to make moves toward the World Cup. Before this year, the winner of the most recent Gold Cup, which in this case, would’ve been Mexico, automatically would’ve represented CONCACAF in the Confederations Cup, but a new rule stated that a team must win both Gold Cups in a four-year World Cup cycle to qualify. The game will go down at 9:30 ET at the Rose Bowl in California, and is expected to attract a MAJOR crowd. It should be a pretty great matchup and there is definitely a lot on the line! Interestingly, Mexico beat the U.S. the last time the teams met at the Rose Bowl four years ago, but in the six matches since, El Tri has never come out on top, with three losses and three draws.
In the 2015 Gold Cup, the U.S. was knocked out in the semifinals, paving the way for Mexico to take on Jamaica in the finals, eventually winning the whole thing. “I was very upset with what happened in the Gold Cup, very upset, but that’s in the past, it’s gone, it’s out the window,” Jurgen Klinsmann, the U.S. head coach, said. “Now we have a sold-out crowd and we have a lot of guests coming in that live here.”hollwoodlife.
