Charli XCX Slams the Gas on Hyperkinetic 'Vroom Vroom'

Charli XCXCharli XCX speeds into the sunset on her hyperkinetic new track, "Vroom Vroom," which she debuted on Beats 1 radio while filling in for DJ Julie Adenuga.

Sophie's production, however, is neither cacophonous, nor claustrophobic, and Charli XCX maneuvers deftly over all of it. She spits luxurious, fast-car braggadocio during the verse in a simple pop rap cadence marked by cleverly placed vocal curls, while the earworm hook is pure bubblegum diva.

"Vroom Vroom" marks Charli XCX's first new song since the cancellation of the second leg of her joint U.S. tour with Bleachers. The singer withdrew from the trek citing "personal reasons," specifically a desire to return to the studio.

"I am struggling to create whilst I'm on the road and that is making me unhappy," she wrote on Facebook. "As an artist I need to move quickly and write a lot to not feel restless. Sometimes touring really puts me in this isolated world where I feel down and sad but primarily I struggle to multitask and write songs at the same time which is what I need to do to feel OK."

Despite the cancellation, Charli XCX has performed recently, including sets at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, and Shadow of the City, a festival created by Bleachers mastermind Jack Antonoff. The release of "Vroom Vroom" also suggests more new music is on the way, but Charli XCX has yet to offer any more details about the follow-up to her breakout 2014 LP, Sucker. rollingstone
