21-Year-Old in Critical Condition After E-Cigarette Exploded in His Mouth

Evan Spahlinger, a 21-year-old from North Naples, Florida, is in a medically induced coma after the e-cigarette he was smoking Monday exploded in his face
, WINK News reports. He is suffering from internal and external burns and lung damage, as doctors believe the mouth piece of the e-cigarette may have been sucked down his throat after the initial explosion and exploded a second time there.

"I was laying in bed with my 2-year-old and I heard an explosion, then I started smelling burning, smoke and fire," Spahlinger's sister Ema Richardson told WINK. "I found my brother not breathing, with his whole face burned and his neck burned and trying to throw up a little or maybe he was gasping for air, so I called 911." The explosion was big enough to set off the house's fire alarm.

According to WPTV, Spahlinger can be heard choking and vomiting in the background of the 911 call. His mother said he has also undergone cosmetic surgery since the explosion.

Richardson told the New York Daily News her brother was able to speak a few words before doctors sedated him: "He said, 'I'm done.' That's it." Doctors have not said if they expect Spahlinger to make a full recovery.

Earlier this year, a 23-year-old man was severely injured in similar accident: James Lauria, also from Florida, had to be fitted for a prosthetic device to close the hole on the roof of his mouth after his e-cigarette blew up in his mouth.cosmopolitan
