These Quotes From The Golden Girls Will Change Your Life

This week, we celebrate the most important pop culture milestone since Clueless turned 20 in July: the 30th anniversary of The Golden Girls, arguably one of the greatest shows to exist, ever.

I mean, think about it. Consisting solely of a cast above age 50, the sitcom about friendship, love, triumph, and tragedy was light-years ahead of its time — especially since it celebrated age and its corresponding wisdom, instead of playing them down. (And what’s another show you can think of that’s done that?)

Thanks to the wit of Dorothy, the sass of Sophia, the confidence of Blanche, and the optimism of Rose, The Golden Girls cemented itself as a beacon of hope by promising viewers that no matter what curveballs life threw or how old we got, sisterhood and common sense will still prevail over everything.

Or, more specifically, real friends will always be there with you to eat cheesecake at night.

So thank you, Golden Girls! For all this, and for the following 13 times you gave us words to live by. (Frankly, they’re the original #SquadGoals.)In the immortal words of Aaliyah, age ain’t nothin’ but a number. And despite our culture’s fear of looking, acting, or getting older, Golden Girls made age seem not just like something to be accepted, but something we can all look forward to. Especially because it involves partying in Miami.Never trust a family member who withholds valuable life advice. And especially don’t trust one who doesn’t preach the pitfalls of jealousy.Modesty is fine, but may we all find Blanche Devereaux-levels of self-confidence. After all, if Golden Girls were set in 2015, you know she’d applaud Kim Kardashian for her penchant for selfies, while giving Ms. K a run for her money with her own Instagram feed.Little did she know that while losing it on Rose, Dorothy was giving us the perfect way to insist on safe sex with any/all gentleman callers.
And again, a moment of silence for Golden Girls’ penchant for real truths.See also: the way any grown-ass women feel whenever somebody starts talking to us about hip bars, ”real” versus “fake” music, tattoos, dreams, nightmares, or anything we didn’t overtly agree to converse about. If only the police knew how grateful they should be to the merits of ice cream.First: you go, Sophia. Second, let’s have a moment for the way Golden Girls dealt with equal rights before it was even cool and/or common to do so. When Blanche finds out that her daughter is gay, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia remind her that her daughter’s happiness ranks before Blanche’s own hang-ups. Why? Because everyone deserves an equal chance at love. For the eighties, this was groundbreaking. (And hell, even for 2015, it’s pretty impressive, too.)Dorothy is the character who would’ve killed it on Twitter, and forever inspired the phrase I just made up now: What Would Dorothy Zbornak Say?
