Lupica: Pope Francis sounds like a true world leader as he rises above petty politics

"You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good." Pope Francis addresses a joint meeting of Congress in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday. Here is what Pope Francis looked like and sounded like this past week, in front of Congress and at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and at the United Nations,
with children and prisoners and victims of abuse, finally saying Mass in front of more than a million people in Philadelphia before getting on the plane that would take him home:

He looked and sounded like the President of the world.

In a week when so many other world leaders, including President Obama, came to the United Nations, this extraordinary Pope was the one to command the attention and the respect of the cities he visited, and the country, as he did something that seemed the opposite of what we too often see in the current political climate, and in this presidential campaign. It means he spoke to the best of us.

He spoke to the best of us whether we are Catholic or not, Democrat or Republican, pro-life or pro-choice, whether we are smart enough to care about global warming, or dumb enough to continue treating an endangered planet like something the tree huggers made up.dailynews
